Rescue saws are devices used by the fire brigade or other aid organizations with the help of which rescue or ventilation openings (see air exchange ) are cut in buildings or vehicles. Both modified chainsaws and hand-held circular saws or cut-off grinders are used as rescue saws . Rescue saws differ from the usual basic devices (which are used in industry, craft, construction and forestry) primarily in the chains (chainsaw) or saw blades (circular saw) used. These components, which deviate from the standard devices, allow the sawing of metal (sheet metal roofs, sandwich elements, nails in wood, body parts), plastics (roller shutters), laminated glass (vehicle windows) and other materials that cannot be cut with a conventional saw, or only with severe device wear can be sawed.

Rescue chainsaws (sometimes referred to as fire brigade chainsaws) are based on standard gasoline chainsaws that are modified with special chains and additional attachments. In order to be able to cut the appropriate materials, the saw must be highly motorized, so various manufacturers ( Dolmar , Husqvarna / Jonsered , Stihl , Cutters Edge) use motors with outputs between approx. 4.0 and 4.9 kW.

Rescue chainsaws differ from the respective basic models in the following components:

  • Special chain (consisting of hard metal, different alloys are used depending on the manufacturer).
  • Solid metal rail (no laminated rails are used)
  • Circumferential handle that enables more flexible handling of the saw
  • Depth gauge (a rail attachment with which the required cutting depth can be set)
  • Exhaust protection, to prevent z. B. Precipitate plastic chips on the hot exhaust

These saws are used to cut with a plunge cut, the front part of the rail is dipped into the material to be cut, and the desired cutting depth is set using a depth adjuster before sawing. The advantage of a rescue chainsaw over hand-held circular saws or cut-off machines is the greater possible cutting depth. The depth gauges used are closed (almost the entire bar is enclosed, only the tip is exposed) and open depth gauges (only a small part of the bar is covered), whereby open depth gauges enable better cooling of the chain.
