The Reuterhaus in Wismar
The Reuterhaus before the reconstruction (1954)

The Reuterhaus is on the historic market square of Wismar opposite the Wasserkunst .

The Mecklenburg publisher Dethloff Carl Hinstorff set up his first publishing bookstore in this originally late baroque building . In 1859, the writer Fritz Reuter signed his first publishing contract here for the publication of the Low German stories ›Läuschen un Rimels‹ (Heard and Rhymed). The house was not destroyed in World War II, but fell into disrepair during the GDR period until it was ready for demolition. Ultimately, the building fabric was deemed to be beyond saving.

In 1988, the Reuterhaus was therefore completely demolished and then reconstructed at great expense . The Reuterhaus is part of the market ensemble, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and houses a small hotel with a restaurant.
