Rewweln

The Rewweln is a custom in which a traditional drink from different schnapps and honey cake between Christmas and New Year in Wittgenstein is drunk in the circle of neighbors.

history

At the end of the year, neighbors and friends traditionally met to resolve their disputes and to strengthen the local community. A large wooden bowl, scraps of honey cake, honey and various types of schnapps were brought to the social gathering .

The honey cake is crumbled in the large wooden bowl, mixed with honey and poured with the schnapps that you brought with you. The composition of the alcoholic beverages is variable. It used to depend on availability in the individual families. Today, the main ingredients used are grain , rum and caraway .

During Rewweln the wooden bowl with the honey cake drink goes around and all guests usually drink three ladles from a wooden spoon. During the sociable drink , all disputes should be settled in the old year. Today, Rewweln focuses on confirming the solidarity of the village community and socializing at the end of the year. The origin of the centuries-old custom is not known.
