Hans-Albrecht Freye (born January 28, 1923 in Aschersleben , † May 24, 1994 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German zoologist and geneticist .

Life

Hans-Albrecht Freye, second child of the teacher Karl Freye, attended high school in Magdeburg , which he graduated from high school in 1941. After serving in the Reich, armed forces and being a prisoner of war, he studied biology and chemistry at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg from 1946 . In 1950 he married the biology student Hedwig Zumpfe (1925-2015) from Bohemian Leipa . Ms. Freye first worked on the middle ear of birds, then on house mice, and in 1954 defended her dissertation. Mrs. Freye went to Paula Hertwig in the medical faculty for further work on the anatomy of house mice .

Hans-Albrecht Freye completed his studies with the state examination, was a lecturer at the workers and farmers faculty from 1950 , later an aspirant and assistant at the zoological institute of the university. After dissertation in 1954 and habilitation in 1958, Freye became a lecturer at Martin Luther University. From 1959 he was the successor to Paula Hertwig, who retired in the same year, director of the biological institute of the medical faculty and was appointed professor in 1961. From 1964 to 1966 Freye was vice dean and then until 1970 dean of the medical faculty.

In 1988 Freye retired and went into politics after the political change. He switched from the LDPD to the FDP and was State Secretary in the State of Saxony-Anhalt from November 1990 until his death, initially in the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture and from July 1991 in the Ministry of Science and Research. His service time included the Gies Cabinet , the Münch Cabinet and the Bergner Cabinet .

In 1971, Hans-Albrecht Freye became a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . From 1973 he was secretary of the mathematics and natural science department of the Leopoldina and from 1978 its general secretary. In 1993 he received the Leopoldina Medal of Merit . In the same year he became a corresponding member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

Political impact

His work as State Secretary after the fall of the Berlin Wall , which resulted in dismissals in the higher education sector in Saxony-Anhalt, was controversial. On the one hand, he was seen as an important university reformer. On the other hand, his previous work as dean of the University of Halle and membership in the LDPD ( Liberal Democratic Party of Germany ) block party were accused of being close to the system. However, the award of the Patriotic Order of Merit of the GDR mentioned in this connection in 1983 was confirmed as purely scientifically justified after an investigation in 1993.
