Rex Jar Society

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The REX canned jar company was a wholesale and production company based in Bad Homburg (Germany).

In 1908 Jean Emil Leonhardt and Friedrich Kleemann founded the wholesale and production company. The company was best known for the production of mason jars . After Leonhardt's death in 1918, Kleemann took over his shares. His son Fritz Kleemann began building Horex motorcycles in 1923 . In 1926 the business with mason jars was discontinued and the trademark rights were sold.

The mark

Almost 20 years later, the trademark rights were sold to the J. Weck company, which also produces jars for preserving . Just as in Germany waking arose as a synonym for this , in Austria waking found its way into everyday language.

From 1950 to 1975 the distribution was subject to Austrian representatives - exclusively and worldwide, whereby the brand was still owned by Weck. In 1956 the Rex trend reached its peak and from 1960 the steady decline in demand began. The reason for this were new inventions such as refrigerators, plastic containers, convenience food, etc. In 1982, the production of Rex glasses was discontinued due to a lack of demand, and two years later the “Rex” brand was also used by the Weck company.

It was not until 2015 that the Rex brand was revived by Müller Glas & Co and one year later the Rex glasses are available again on the market with a new range and branding in retro style.
