history

Johann Heinrich Valentin Paul , known as "Rhönpaulus", also "Karl Paulus", was a boy born in Weilar in 1736 as the illegitimate child of a maid and a soldier. At the age of five he lost his mother and was taken over by the farmer of the Kohlbachshof near Roßdorf . He was looked after by the Rossdorf shepherd and lived apart from society. Out of a thirst for adventure, he let himself be enlisted by Prussian recruits for army service in 1759 and took part in battles in the Seven Years War . The life of a soldier was dangerous, in 1764 he deserted and fled to his homeland, the Rhön. However, he could not live from casual work, he led a life as a poacher, smuggler and robber. His shelter was the Rhönpaulushöhle on Neuberg. This tiny crevice was known only to a few. In 1780 he was hung on the gallows at the place of execution near Wiesenthal . The wooden box that was used to transport the Rhönpaulus to the gallows is shown in the Dermbacher Heimatmuseum.

The adventurous life of the Rhönpaulus was chosen as the motif for a musical that premiered in Dermbach in 2009 with great success. This increased interest in the figure that is now being advertised as "Robin Hood der Rhön". An interest group made up of representatives from the community of Dermbach, the Thuringian Forest Administration and the Rhön Nature Park developed the idea of the Rhönpaulus hiking trail around the Neuberg. On the hiking trail there are signs pointing to the Rhönpaulushöhle and the place of execution at the Wiesenthaler gallows.
