Rheder traffic light

The Original Rheder Ampel has 32% alcohol and consists of three liqueurs: sloe (red), anise (yellow) and peppermint (green).

The Rheder Ampel is a regional liqueur specialty from the city of Rhede , consisting of sloe (red), aniseed (yellow) and peppermint (green) with 32 percent alcohol by volume. The idea goes back to the housekeeper and innkeeper Anna Finke ("Aunt Änne") and the Rheder distillery owner Josef Tebrügge.

Name and story

The origin of the idea is unclear. According to one version, the first traffic light in the state capital of Düsseldorf is said to have motivated the well-known Rheder innkeeper Anna Finke, known as Tante Änne, to draw level with different colored liqueurs with her own traffic light. According to another story, it was the first traffic light in Rhede that sparked it off. She developed the ingredients for this "crazy idea" in the truest sense of the word together with the Rheder distillery owner Josef Tebrügge, where she first worked as a housekeeper and later in the agriculture and restaurant business. At the distillery house in Tebrugge (founded in 1852 and since then family-owned), Doppelkorn, bitters and various liqueurs were mainly produced and sold beyond Rhede and the region. For the Rheder Ampel , the flavors of sloe, aniseed and peppermint were made as a liqueur on the basis of pure wheat grain distillate. The beverage combination was first sold in the in-house inn and later also in shops.

Meaning and drinking ritual

Today the Rheder Ampel is an integral part of tourism marketing in the region, is served in some restaurants and advertised on tours. There are different views on the order in which one should drink the traffic light. One goes like this: If you have something else to do in the evening, drink the traffic light from red to green. Whoever wants to go home drinks them from green to red.
