Schlehenlikör , also Sloe Gin (from English sloe , Schlehe ' ) or Schlehenfeuer , describes a liqueur made from the fruits of the blackthorn (sloe, sloe berries), a stone fruit related to the plums .

Recipes

Many recipes have been handed down for the production of homemade sloe liqueur. Usually ripe sloe fruits, which are harvested after the first frost, are mixed with sugar and grain , vodka , gin or rum . Cinnamon , cloves , nutmeg or star anise are sometimes added as additional flavors . This batch is stored for several weeks or months, then filtered and bottled.

In industrial production, sloe fruits are macerated in alcohol ; in addition, sugar removes the juice from the fruit. The prussic acid contained in the kernels of sloe fruits gives sloe liqueurs a bitter almond-like aroma.

Sloe gin

Sloe Gin is the common English name for sloe liqueur and includes both self-made and commercially sold products. Sloe gins were long forgotten, but - also due to the song of the same name by Tim Curry from 1978 - they are enjoying increasing popularity again recently and are offered by various manufacturers, including Gordon's (26% vol.), Boudier ( 25% Vol.), Cowen (26%), Hayman's (26% Vol.), Plymouth (26% Vol.), Monkey's (29%) as well as the Munich company The Bitter Truth (28% Vol.) And the Langeooger Gin Company with the variation Black Island Gin No. 3 (30% vol.) As well as a RESERVE variation stored in the hybrid barrel.

In the European Union , Sloe Gin is defined as a liqueur with an alcohol content of at least 25% vol. (Other liqueurs: at least 15% vol.), Which is made by maceration of sloes (fruits). The addition of sloe juice is possible. Otherwise, only natural flavorings and flavor extracts may be used. Like every liqueur, Sloe Gin must have a minimum sugar content of 100 g invert sugar per liter, but is often less sweet than other fruit liqueurs. Contrary to what the name suggests, gin does not have to be used to make it, as was previously the case (hence the name); ethyl alcohol of agricultural origin is sufficient . However, many manufacturers still use real gin.

In Dorstone ( Herefordshire ) there is a Sloe Gin Competition (Sloe Gin Competition) every year in January , where prizes are awarded for Sloe Gins that you have prepared yourself .

A well-known cocktail with Sloe Gin is the Sloe Gin Fizz .
