Rhine Cup

The Rheinpokal (also U21 Rheinpokal ) is a competition for the men's selection teams of the national soccer associations of the southern Rhine bordering Southwest , South Baden , Hesse , Baden , Württemberg and Saarland .

The competition was launched in 1975 by the Strasbourg professor and former trainer of the Karlsruher SC Paul Frantz and has been played every two years since then. It serves the six participating regional associations as preparation for the regional cup of the German Football Association. The two preliminary round winners, determined after a two-legged round of two seasons, qualify for the final in which the winner of the Rhine Cup is determined.

In the first years of the competition from 1975 to 1987, the Alsatian Football Association also took part in the Rhine Cup. Due to a structural reform of the French Football Association, it had to forego participation after the sixth competition. The associations from Hesse and the Rhineland applied for the vacant space. Due to a drawing of lots, the Hessian Football Association moved up to the group of participating associations at the beginning of the seventh competition.
