Rhino Hero Super Battle is a skill game for children and games by the game authors Scott Frisco and Steven Strumpf . The game for two to four players, ages five and up, takes around 10 to 20 minutes per round. It was published in 2017 by the publisher HABA international, and in 2018 the game was included on the recommendation list for children's game of the year .

Theme and equipment

In the Rhino Hero Super Battle , players play the role of superheroes and try to build and climb a skyscraper made of walls of various sizes and mezzanines. The player whose attempt to build the house collapses loses the game, while the player whose hero is (or was) at the top of the tower wins the game.

The game material consists of a set of instructions:

  • three double-sided printed map parts (plot plates),
  • 24 high and 24 lower wall elements,
  • 30 shelves,
  • four wooden characters (Rhino Hero, Batguin, Big E. and Giraffe Boy)
  • four monkey figures (Spider-Monkeys),
  • three dice, of which a red 1 to 6, a blue 1 to 5 and a light blue -1 to 3, and
  • a sky-striker medal.

Style of play

Before the game, each player chooses a superhero character. The three game board tiles are placed next to each other on the playing field. The intermediate floors are shuffled and each player receives three of them, the rest is placed as a face-down pile in the middle of the table next to the plots and the top three intermediate floors are revealed. All other game elements are distributed on the table so that everyone can reach them.

Actions per game round
  • Play out the intermediate shelf
  • Build walls
  • Place the intermediate shelf
  • possibly attach monkeys
  • Throw the light blue dice and climb the house
  • possibly super battle or medal
  • Tighten the intermediate shelf

The game is played clockwise. The active player plays an intermediate floor from his hand and takes the wall elements shown on it. He builds these either on the points of the plots or (in later rounds) on already standing parts of the building. Then he has to lay the intermediate floor on the new Wandelemete so that it lies horizontally. If a monkey symbol is also shown on the intermediate floor, a Spider-Monkey must be attached to the newly laid floor.

As soon as the floor is installed, the player throws the light blue dice and determines how many floors he can climb. The possible dice results range from -1 to 3. Depending on the result, the player moves his superhero figure and can thus climb the building. If he lands on a floor on which there is already an opposing figure, a dice duel (super battle) occurs. The active player (attacker) receives the red die (1 to 6) and the player with the figure (defender) already standing on the floor receives the blue die (1 to 5). Whoever throws the higher number wins, and his opponent must move his figure one floor down. The highest standing player receives the Himmelsstürmer medal. At the end of the turn, the player draws one of the open intermediate floors and fills the gap with a card from the draw pile.

The game can be ended in two ways. It ends immediately if a player causes the building to collapse in whole or in part while installing his walls or intermediate floors. In this case, the player who last received the Sky Striker medal wins. If this player caused the collapse, all other players win together. Alternatively, the game ends when no more intermediate floor can be drawn and all floors have been built in by the hands. In this case, too, the player with the Himmelsstürmer medal wins the game.
