The Mount Tapulao nasal rat ( Rhynchomys tapulao ) is a rodent in the genus of nasal rats that is found in the Philippines .

features

The species reaches a total length of 290 to 308 mm, a tail length of 120 to 128 mm and a weight of 129 to 156 g. The top is covered with golden-brown fur, while on the underside there is almost white fur, which can occasionally have gray spots. The tail is gray near the trunk and white about halfway down. Rhynchomys tapulao has narrow hind feet that are 38 to 40 mm long. The head is characterized by a long, pointed snout, long vibrissae, small eyes and ears 24 to 25 mm long.

Distribution and way of life

This nasal rat is only known from the slopes of the Tapulao mountain in the western part of the island of Luzon . The specimens were found at an average height of 2025 m. Presumably it reaches other areas of the mountain range. The mountain is covered with moist forest in this area.

The Mount Tapulao nasal rat is probably nocturnal and / or crepuscular. When examining the animals' stomachs, remains of insects and earthworms were found.

The species is threatened by changes in the landscape in connection with the establishment of agricultural and mining areas. The IUCN lists the Mount Tapulao nasal rat in the category "insufficient data" (data deficient) .
