Lists on the subject

The Ribchester helmet is a helmet of the Roman cavalry found in 1796 in the English town of Ribchester ( Lancashire ) . Together with the Newstead helmet , it forms the type helmet of the Ribchester-Newstead class.

description

The helmet, which dates from the 1st or 2nd century AD, was used as a protective and ceremonial weapon. It is made of bronze and is 276 mm high and weighs 1305.6 grams. The helmet bell is round and provided with a neck shield and a large shield over the eyes. It is in two parts, which is why the helmet bell and mask were made separately from each other. The mask can be inserted into the helmet bowl and is fixed with leather straps. The masks are usually also made of bronze or are made of white metal ( Britannia metal ). A hairstyle is worked out on the upper edge and the helmet bell is decorated with figurative representations of riders and infantry in battle. It is believed that a helmet ornament ( Zimier ) was attached to the top of the helmet, which was designed in the shape of a sphinx . However, this has not been preserved. It belongs to the masked helmets and was not made for combat, but was used like other helmets of this type in sporting events called ( Latin ) hippica gymnasia . The Ribchester helmet , along with the Crosby Garrett helmet and the Newstead helmet, is one of the only three helmets of this type found in England.
