Ricardo Cabrisas

Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz (born January 21, 1937 in Havana ) is a Cuban politician of the Communist Party of Cuba , who has been Vice Chairman of the Council of Ministers since 2009 and Minister of Economic Affairs since July 2016.

Life

Cabrisas comes from a working-class family from Havana and after attending secondary school, joined the July 26th Movement led by Fidel Castro . In the following years he took part in the revolution against the authoritarian rule of President Fulgencio Batista .

After Batista's fall in 1959, he joined the international intelligence service Dirección General de Inteligencia (DGI) and, after working as an operational officer, was head of the DGI's representation in Canada for several years . The young politician, sponsored by Castro and Celia Sánchez , completed a degree in foreign trade , which he completed with a bachelor's degree, as well as a degree in political science , which he completed with a licentiate .

In 1970 Cabrisas was appointed Deputy Minister for Foreign Trade and finally became Minister for Foreign Trade ( Ministro del Comercio Exterior ) in 1980 as the successor to Marcelo Fernández Font himself . He held this ministerial office for almost twenty years until he was replaced by Raúl de la Nuez Ramírez in 1999, during which time he worked with Castro, particularly on issues relating to cooperation with international and regional organizations and multilateral matters. He also exercised influence on Cuban foreign policy as Castro's personal envoy at special conferences of the World Health Organization , the United Nations , the Group of 77 , the ACP Group and the Caribbean Community .

In 1999 he took over the post of minister without portfolio ( Ministro de Gobierno sin cartera ) for ten years , before becoming one of the vice- chairmen of the Council of Ministers and of its executive committee ( Vice-Presidente del Consejo de Ministros y de su Comité Ejecutivo ) in 2009 . Cabrisas is also a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and a member of the National Assembly ( Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular ). On July 13, 2016, Cabrisas took over the post of Minister of Economics from his predecessor Marino Murillo .
