Ricardo Antonio Torres Tafur (born February 16, 1980 in Magangué ) is a former Colombian professional boxer and world champion of the WBO light welterweight. He is the younger brother of the professional boxer José Torres.

Career

He started professional boxing in 2001 and won 28 build-up fights in Colombia and Puerto Rico, 26 of them by knockout, 11 of them in the first round. Although he had not yet beaten a significant opponent, he was able to box for the WBO light welterweight title in September 2005. He met the title holder Miguel Cotto (24-0, 20 K. o.) From Puerto Rico, whom he was able to beat to the ground for the first time in his professional career in the second round. Torres also got good actions in the first, fifth, sixth and seventh round, although he had to accept three downfalls himself. In the seventh round he finally lost to the experienced world champion by knockout.

After a subsequent knockout win against Carlos Donquiz, he was able to box again for the WBO title in November 2006. This was meanwhile vacant after Cotto had resigned the title. Torres won this duel by a majority decision on points against the Greek Mike Arnaoutis (17-0, 10 early). He defended the title in 2007 against the Mexican Arturo Morua (25-8) and through tKo in the eleventh round against Kendall Holt (22-1). In the rematch against Holt in September 2007, he surprisingly lost by knockout in the first round after he had previously hit his opponent twice.

He ended his career in May 2009 after a tKo win against Raúl Pinzón.
