Riccius is an impact crater to the south of the lunar front , southeast of Rabbi Levi crater and southwest of Stiborius . The crater is very badly eroded and the crater rim is superimposed many times.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Italian astronomer Augustinus Riccius and the Jesuit mathematician and geographer Matteo Ricci .
