Richard Bienert (born September 5, 1881 in Smichow , † February 3, 1949 in Prague ) was a Czechoslovak politician.

Life

After attending high school, he studied law at Prague University . From 1906 he worked for the Prague police.

During the First World War , Richard Bienert fought underground for the creation of an independent Czech state.

As Prague police chief, Bienert was arrested by the Gestapo in 1939 , but released again on President Hácha's initiative . Bienert had been Minister of the Interior of the Czech Protectorate Government from the beginning of 1942 and succeeded Jaroslav Krejčí from January to May 1945 as the last head of government of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia . Since the protectorate was just out of the reach of Allied bombers, its economy delivered important war goods almost undisturbed until the end of the war. Bienert was arrested on May 5, 1945 on his way to the radio , where he wanted to officially announce the end of the Protectorate. After the end of the war he was sentenced to 3 years in prison. He was released from prison in May 1947 and died in February 1949.
