Amara is a small town in Ialomița County in Romania .
location
Amara is located in the Bărăgan steppe, part of the Wallachian Plain , on the north-west bank of the steppe lake of the same name ( Lacul Amara ). The district capital Slobozia is located about 8 km southeast of Amara.
history
The region around Lake Amara was first mentioned in a document at the time of the Wallachian prince Matei Basarab . At that time the lands were donated to the monastery in Slobozia . They came to the Romanian state in 1864 through the secularization of the monastery property. The first chemical analyzes of Lake Amara were carried out in 1887. As a result, a settlement developed on the lake as a health resort. Part of the spa facilities was destroyed in the First World War. After the Second World War, the spa business was intensified and extended to the whole year. In 2004 Amara was declared a city.
Lake Amara contains sulfur, salt, magnesium and small amounts of iodine and bromine. Its water and digested sludge are used to treat rheumatoid diseases, diseases of the peripheral nervous system, gynecological and dermatological diseases.
Besides tourism, agriculture and trade are of economic importance.
population
In 1930 about 2600 people lived in the area of today's city. At the 2002 census, Amara had 7,627 inhabitants, including 7,578 Romanians , 25 Roma and 10 Hungarians .

Amara has no rail connection. There are regular bus connections to Slobozia.
