Richard Brent Tully (born March 9, 1943 in Toronto ) is an American astronomer and cosmologist at the Department of Astronomy at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu .

Life

Tully graduated from the University of British Columbia with a bachelor's degree in 1964 and received a PhD in astronomy from the University of Maryland in 1972 . In the same year he married. He then worked as a post-doctoral student at the Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bologna and at the Marseille Observatory. In 1975 he became an assistant astronomer at the Honolulu Institute of Astronomy, an associate astronomer in 1977 and an astronomer in 1982.

He was at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory Chile in 1982/83 and at the Meudon Observatory in 1983. From 1985 to 1987 he was on the Steering Committee of the Keck Observatory .

In 1977 Tully established with J. Richard Fisher the Tully-Fisher relationship between luminosity and rotation speed of spiral galaxies, which enables their distance to be determined.

He published a catalog with the 3-dimensional locations of the 68,000 galaxies, which are closer than 700 million light years from Earth. In 1987 he identified the Pisces-Cetus supercluster complex of galaxies, one of the largest known structures in the universe, 1 billion light years long and 150 million light years wide. He later succeeded in discovering the Laniakea supercluster, which, according to Tully and colleagues, also includes our Milky Way.

In 2014 he received the Gruber Prize for Cosmology for contributions to cosmology in the “close vicinity” of the Milky Way.
