Richard Hausmann (historian)

Richard Gotthard Gustav Hausmann (born November 28, 1842 in Werro , Russian Empire , † December 19, 1918 in Dorpat , Estonia ) was a Baltic German historian.

Life

Richard Hausmann attended the district school in Werro and from 1857 to 1861 the government high school in Reval. In 1862 he studied chemistry and from 1862 to 1866 and 1867 he was a student of history at the University of Dorpat , among others with Carl Schirren .

From 1880 to 1896 he was professor of general history at the University of Dorpat. From 1881 to 1890 he was also director of the university library, from 1885 to 1889 deputy vice-rector and from 1889/1890 dean. Because of the Russification of the University of Dorpat, he submitted his resignation in 1896.

Membership in scientific and literary associations

He has been awarded numerous memberships for his research. In 1872 he became a corresponding member and from 1885 to 1918 he was co-director of the Society for History and Archeology of the Baltic Provinces of Russia in Riga. In 1895 he became its honorary member. He was an honorary member of the Estonian Literary Society (1892) and the Courlandian Society for Literature and Art (1896). Hausmann was a member of the Pernau Antiquities Society (1896), the Latvian Literary Society and the Estonian Scholarly Society (1896). He also became a corresponding member of the antiquity societies in Berlin, Moscow and Odessa.
