Richard Kennedy (born December 23, 1932 in Missouri ) is an American author .

Life

Richard Kennedy graduated from Portland University of Oregon with a PhD in literature in 1958. He worked as a teacher and on a fishing boat and served four years in the American Air Force. He then settled in Newport and became a curator at the Center for Oceanology at the University of Oregon. In 1960 he married Nancy Kennedy; the couple have two sons, Matthew and Joseph, and two grandchildren. Richard Kennedy lives in Newport, Oregon .

In 1988 he was awarded the Pied Piper Prize of the City of Hameln for his book The Fantastic Journey of Annis Eyes, the Rag Dolls and the Captain (original title: Amy's Eyes ) . This prize is awarded every two years by a jury for an outstanding children's book that has been translated into German . The fairy tale The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen became a popular Christmas fairy tale when it was arranged in collaboration with Mark Lambert (music).

In 1993, the short story Oliver Hyde's Dishcloth Concert and the fairy tale The Porcelain Man were included in Oxford University Press publications , The Oxford Book of Children's Stories and The Oxford Book of Modern Fairy Tales.

His works have been translated into nine languages ​​including Afrikaans and Japanese.

In 2006 Kennedy completed the burlesque comedy in two acts Camelot - God Wot! Or: What a Woman Wants . Mark Lambert, who had already set The Snow Queen to music and who died of a serious illness in December 2008 at the age of 57, wrote the music, which mixes medieval with modern sounds and rhythms, for the numerous songs of this musical.
