Richard Spethmann (born February 8, 1891 in Altona , † April 1, 1960 in Schwerin ) was a German theater actor, director, theater director and Low German writer.

Life

Richard Spethmann was born in Altona in 1891. As early as 1910 he was on stage as an actor and singer at the United Theater Schleswig / Wismar, where he also worked as a dramaturge and stage manager. A time at the Neustrelitzer Hoftheater followed, also as an actor and singer. From 1917 to 1956 he had an engagement at the Schwerin Grand Ducal Court Theater , the later Mecklenburg State Theater . Here he worked in the opera choir and from 1919 as an actor, where he played roles in various fields such as drama, opera and operetta.

After 1919 Spethmann was the founder and for many years became director of the Niederdeutsche Bühne , which was affiliated with the State Theater from 1926 (under the name Fritz-Reuter-Bühne since 1946 ). Here his roles in Hermann Boßdorf's Low German dramas “De Fährkrog” and “Bahnmeester Dod” should be emphasized. In 1942 he was awarded the John Brinckman Prize for his work. Spethmann dramatized Fritz Reuter's "Unkel Bräsig", in which he played the Pomuchelskopp . The piece was performed in 1948. At a celebratory event on the occasion of his 45th stage anniversary, he played the title character in Selma Lagerlöf's play "The Emperor of Portugal" in 1955 .

Richard Spethmann died shortly after reaching the age of 69. His grave is in the old cemetery in Schwerin.
