Richard Sykes

Sir Richard Sykes (* 1942 in Yorkshire , England ) is a British biochemist and microbiologist .

Life

Richard Sykes was born the son of a carpenter. He attended night school and earned two PhDs, one in chemistry from London University and one in microbiology from Bristol University .

In 1972 he went to Glaxo for the first time . He left Glaxo five years later and worked for US competitor Squibb until he finally returned to Glaxo in 1986. He worked as the company's managing director until 1993. In 1994 he was ennobled as a Knight Bachelor ("Sir"). When he turned 60 in 2002, he left the company, now renamed GlaxoSmithKline , and went to Imperial College .

In the 1970s, he and Mark H. Richmond examined the antibiotic resistance of bacteria and classified the β-lactamases involved .
