Richard of Montfort

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richard von Montfort († probably November 1092 before Conches-en-Ouche ) was lord of Montfort-l'Amaury and Épernon from the house of Montfort-l'Amaury . He was the first son of Simon I of Montfort from his second marriage to Agnes von Évreux.

Richard succeeded his older half-brother Amalrich II as Lord of Montfort after he had died in a battle around 1089. At the same time his sister Bertrada married Count Fulko IV of Anjou .

Richard himself was involved in a family feud that had sparked over the succession in the Norman county of Évreux . His uncle, Count Wilhelm von Évreux , was married to Dame Havise von Nevers. The count's half-brother was the lord of the castle Raoul II. De Tosny , who in turn was married to Richard's older half-sister, Isabelle de Montfort. Both women were considered to be the driving force in the war between the two half-brothers, as both wanted to assert their own children as heirs of Évreux. Richard decided in this fight for Count Wilhelm's side and thus also stood against his own sister. Presumably in November 1092 he besieged the Tosny Castle Conches , was hit by an arrow and killed.

Richard was buried in Épernon, as lord of Montfort he was followed by his brother Simon II .

Raoul II. De Tosny and Isabella were able to prevail in the feud until 1095 and force Count Wilhelm to appoint one of their sons as heir. Because Raoul de Tosny and his son died before Count Wilhelm and he had no children himself, Richard's youngest brother, Amalrich III , followed later (1118) . , as heir in Évreux.

Ordericus Vitalis reported the feud in Book VIII of his Historia Ecclesiastica .
