The Richardson Mountains are a mountain range in northern Canada . They run west of the Mackenzies along the northern part of the border between the Yukon and Northwest Territories . With an extension of 408 km in north-south and 255 km in east-west direction, they cover an area of 46,567 km². The highest point has a height of 1240 m .
The Richardson Mountains are often viewed as the northernmost part of the Rocky Mountains , but the actual Rockies end further south on the Liard River . Further west closes in Alaska , the Brooks Range to.
The Dempster Highway from Dawson to Inuvik on the Mackenzie Delta crosses the Richardson Mountains. The mountain range was named in 1825 after Sir John Richardson , a Scottish natural historian, physician, botanist and geologist.
