Richmond Fontaine is an American alternative rock and country band from Portland , Oregon.

Band history

The head of the band, guitarist and singer Willy Vlautin, founded his first band in his native Nevada at the age of 16, but the opportunities to perform in the sparsely populated state were not enough for him, so he went to the neighboring state of Oregon. In Portland in 1994 he met bassist Dave Harding and drummer Stuart Gaston and they founded Richmond Fontaine . After performing for two years, they released their first album on a local label. In the same year they changed the label and started several tours through different states. More albums and line-up changes followed. Paul Brainard came on with the pedal steel guitar , Dan Eccles joined as an additional guitarist and Sean Oldham joined Gaston as drummer.

Over the years, the band released albums regularly and made a name for themselves without much success. The band became known for their lyrics, written by Willy Vlautin. From 2006 he also published several novels. Richmond Fontaine are also known beyond North America and in 2009 they succeeded with the album We Used to Think the Freeway Sounded Like a River in Great Britain, which they had not been able to do in their home country: a place in the charts.
