At the place of execution in Bensheim , death sentences were carried out in the late Middle Ages and early modern times by the jury on the Landberg , which met near Heppenheim .

The place of execution is between Bensheim and Heppenheim, east of the B 3 ; the name of the corridor is "An der Galgenwiese".

Place of execution

The jury on the Landberg was a joint institution of the neighboring towns of Bensheim and Heppenheim. Each parish provided half of the 14 lay judges . Death sentences from the court were carried out at the neighboring execution site. The executioner lived in front of Bensheim's city wall. 55 death sentences are on record for the period from 1525 to 1799. After 1799 there were no more executions here.

Worth knowing

The remains of some of those executed were recovered in 2002–2003 and have been archaeologically and anthropologically examined.
