Execution sites in Salzburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There have been several execution sites in the area of the city of Salzburg over the centuries .

The place of execution at the Galgentor in front of Linzergasse

The oldest place of execution in the city of Salzburg is mentioned in a document as early as the 14th century in front of the Linzer Tor. To this day, three crosses on Schallmooser Hauptstrasse remind of the old place of execution in front of this gate, which was also called Galgentor and Sebastianstor and was demolished in 1894. The place of execution was about 100 m into the city of the three crosses. As an enlightened prince, Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau had the medieval execution site with the corpses rotting on the gallows on the busy Linzerstraße, which was a nuisance to him here, relocated to a very remote location in Gneiss .

The place of execution in gneiss

The former place of execution with the closest Freimannhaus (Freimann = executioner) existed between 1599 and 1817 (last execution with the sword). It was or is away from the old Berchtesgadener Straße and far outside the city and the town charter on Totenweg (today Neukommgasse - Georg-Nikolaus-von-Nissen-Straße - Moosbruckerweg). The new place of execution consisted of a gallows, a poor sinners cross for the last prayer of the condemned and the beheading place. Both the gallows (historically known as the galling ) and the Köpfstätte (historically headed ) were located on an approximately three-meter-high, brick-built and accessible platform. From around 1700 the poor sinners cemetery also belonged to this place of execution , which was also located on Neukommgasse not far from today's Salzburg municipal cemetery . A funeral home is located there today.

The executioner's house ( Freymann's dwelling ) and the place of execution were owned by the prince-archbishopric until after 1790. The building on Neukommgasse, which dates back at least to around 1700, has been preserved to this day; it is the old farmhouse of the Martin farmer and thus the real hangman's house . (The so-called Krautwächterhaus on the Krauthügel south of the Hohensalzburg Fortress is often incorrectly referred to as this.) This house, together with the surrounding culturally and historically significant green space, is one of the city's important monuments that are absolutely worth preserving. The structure is currently not in use and threatens to deteriorate.

The former Galgenwirt (now Hotel and Gasthof Hölle at the municipal cemetery) also reminds of the old place of execution. The original gallows landlord was, however, east of the obelisk in Kern-Park in front of the municipal cemetery, he had to move when the cemetery was built, as a "gallows landlord" directly in front of the entrance to the cemetery was undesirable.

Other places of execution

The soldier's gallows was located in front of the Alte Türnitz north of the State Bridge in the area of today's Hanuschplatz (in the historic old town) in the time of the archbishopric. In the 18th century, soldiers were executed on the soldier's gallows in front of the Linzertor. A few people were executed in the area south of the "Scharte" between Mönchsberg and Festungsberg - that is, near the Krautwächterhaus.
