The Ridley Beach is a tapered and 1.5 km long beach in the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It is located 1.5 km south of Cape Adare on the west coast of the Adare Peninsula .
The beach was the site of the winter camp of the British Southern Cross Expedition under the direction of the Norwegian polar explorer Carsten Egeberg Borchgrevink . He named it after his mother's maiden name . The northern group led by the British polar explorer Victor Campbell (1875-1956) on the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913) went ashore here in 1911 and extended the name to the entire beach. It is the site of one of the world's largest breeding colonies of Adelie penguins .
