Ridley Hall

Ridley Hall is a country house in Bardon Mill in the English county of Northumberland . The 18th century house is listed by English Heritage as a Grade II Historic Building.

history

A 16th century house that belonged to the Ridley family stood on what is now Ridley Hall . The Lowes family bought it at the end of the 17th century and had a new Georgian- style country house built on its stele in 1743 .

In 1795 John Lowes died , who was the High Sheriff of Northumberland in 1790 . His eldest son and heir, William Cornforth Lowes , died in 1810 and his younger brother and subsequent heir in 1812. In 1818, Thomas Bates bought Ridley Hall.

In 1830 John Davidson , who was High Sheriff of Northumberland in 1839 , a cousin of William Cornforth Lowes, who was also mentioned in his will, bought the house and had it rebuilt significantly. He married Susan Jessup , a daughter of the 9th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne , who bequeathed the property to the art collector John Bowes , a son of her brother John Bowes, 10th Earl of Strathmore and Kingborne .

In 1891 the house received a new main building in the New Tudor style, which the architect Horatio Adamson designed for Frances Bowes-Lyon . The west wing of the 18th century building became the new wing for the servants.

The Bowes-Lyon family did not stay at Ridley Hall often, and in the 20th century they sold the house to Reverend EA Evans , who set up a private school there. In the mid-1960s, this was merged with the Featherstone Preparatory School from the nearby Haltwhistle . In 1967, under-enrollment forced the school to close and Reverend EA Evans retired. Then Northern Counties College of Long Benton in Newcastle upon Tyne bought and housed a teacher training college for first year teacher students.

today

The house now provides accommodation for students at Haydon Bridge High School , one of the few state boarding schools in England. Students living in Otterburn or further away stayed at Ridley Hall during school years, with most going home on weekends. The country house is available for weddings and conferences on weekends and during school holidays, but it is not open to the public.

Ridley Hall sits on 13.2 acres of light forest, playing fields, and lawns. The property is adjacent to Allen Banks Park in a gorge of the River Allen owned by the National Trust .
