The Rieseler R III / 22 was a single-engine aircraft owned by the brothers Werner and Walter Rieseler .

history

In 1921, the brothers Werner and Walter Rieseler developed the Rieseler R II, a small single-seat sport aircraft whose flight characteristics were so good that the company Stahlwerk Mark in Breslau agreed to start series production. A year later the machine appeared as the Rieseler R III / 22 with some improvements . The aircraft became famous in 1923 when it took part in a flight competition in Gothenburg and, above all, when Antonius Raab landed on Unter den Linden in the center of Berlin . The Rieseler R IV was an enlarged version with two seats, but production was discontinued as early as 1927.

construction

The high- wing aircraft designed as a composite construction. The wings and the fuselage consisted of a fabric-covered wooden and tubular steel framework. The aircraft was initially powered by the Haacke HFM 2a two-cylinder boxer engine with an output of 20.5 kW. Later, an Anzani motor with an output of 37 kW (R IIIa / 22) and a self-developed Mark motor with an output of 28.6 kW (R IIIb / 22) were used.

Preserved copies

The only surviving original aircraft with the registration number S-AAR is in the Aviation Museum at Stockholm / Arlanda Airport . A replica is in the Aviation Museum Laatzen-Hannover . Two more replicas have been approved in Germany. One of them is now in the Cottbus Airfield Museum .
