Giant linden tree to Heede

The giant linden tree zu Heede , also known as the thick linden tree and the thousand-year-old linden tree , is a protected natural monument in Heede , a municipality in the municipality of Dörpen in the Emsland district of Lower Saxony .

It is considered the largest linden tree in Europe. For centuries it has been the landmark and center of the village and has also found its place in the municipality's coat of arms .

The linden, a summer linden (Tilia platyphyllos), has a trunk circumference of 15.39 meters. It is 20 meters high and has a crown diameter of approx. 35 meters. Their age is estimated to be over 500 to 1000 years. In October 2019 the summer linden tree was named nationwide first " national heritage tree ".
