Haldorf giant stone

The giant stone of Haldorf is a menhir in the district of Haldorf of the municipality of Edermünde in the Schwalm-Eder district in northern Hesse .

The existence of the boulder , a menhir, probably from the 3rd millennium BC. BC, on the arable land below the Dünzebach farm, it was already known before 1900 that it was not possible to drive pasture stakes at this point and that the stone slab was always hit when plowing. In 1961 the stone was exposed and its dimensions were marked out. In 1975 he was erected and framed by the Bundeswehr with the help of an armored recovery vehicle near a dried up spring on the southwestern outskirts of Haldorf, about 30 m south of where it was found.

The quartz sandstone is 5.4 m high, 3.2 m wide and up to 1.1 m thick and weighs approx. 25 tons. There is no natural quartzite in the vicinity of the site.
