The reef bee ( Apis mellifera major , often incorrectly referred to as the reef bee ) is a subspecies of the honey bee in North Africa . It was discovered by chance in the Moroccan Rif Mountains in 1974 . It is considered the link between the European and the African bee.
morphology
Apis mellifera major resembles the very closely related subspecies Apis mellifera intermissa ( tell bee ) and, like them, is dark in color. However, it is remarkably large in comparison to the Tell bee and has a very long proboscis that can measure up to 7.0 mm.
