Riidaja (German Morsel-Podrigel ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the Estonian rural community Tõrva (until 2017 Põdrala ) in Valga County . It is located 35 kilometers southeast of Viljandi .

Location and history

Riidaja is the main town in the rural community of Põdrala ( Põdrala vald ). The village has 235 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011).

In 1833 the Baltic German nobleman Georg Constantin von Stryk (1797–1886) founded the village school. In 1967 the current school building was built in the form of a functional building.

The most famous son of the place is the Estonian ethnographer Ferdinand Linnus (1895–1942). He was born on the Kalme farm belonging to Riidaja.

From 1562 until the Estonian land reform after the First World War , the Riidaja estate belonged to the German Baltic family von Stryk .

In 1762 the simple wooden mansion was built. The one-story building was designed in the Baroque style. The baroque main door of the manor house, which is still preserved today, is of particular art historical interest. Today the village library is housed in the manor house. Some of the manor's outbuildings have also been preserved.

The estate's park, which is almost six hectares in size, extends behind the manor house. It was also laid out as a baroque garden in the second half of the 18th century, although it was transformed into a landscape garden in the 19th century .

The neo-Gothic burial chapel of the von Stryk family is also located in Riidaja . It dates from the second half of the 19th century. The building was restored in 2000. The chapel has served as the local church since 2001.

The Estonian-speaking name of the estate and village, "Riidaja", originated from the Baltic German noble family Freytag von Loringhoven , to whom the estate was pledged from 1697 to 1725.
