Riin Tamm (born August 12, 1981 in Tartu ) is an Estonian geneticist and a popular scientist . She is the director of the University of Tartu Youth Academy . As a student, she worked on thiopurine methyltransferase .

Life

Tamm was born in Tartu and grew up in the village of Peri near Põlva . She is the daughter of two doctors. Between 1997 and 2000 she attended the Miina Harma high school in Tartu. From 2001 to 2005 she studied molecular diagnostics at the University of Tartu and from 2005 to 2007 a master’s degree, which she completed in 2007. The Estonian began her doctoral studies under the supervision of Andres Metspalu and Kersti Oselin. Her dissertation was entitled Thiopurine Methyltransferase Pharmacogenetics: Genotype-Phenotype Correlation and Haplotype Analysis in the Estonian Population . In 2011 she was selected as one of 26 scientists to participate in events in schools and academic institutions in Estonia. Tamm works at the University of Tartu .

Tamm has published in scientific journals and presented her research to a wider audience in inclusive places, including Postimees newspaper , Kukus Falling Apple Radio (Kukkuv õun - August 28, 2010) and Eesti Televisioons' Good Vision program . She was one of the jurors in the Estonian science competition Rakett69 .

Tamm is a board member of the Estonian Society of Human Genetics (Eesti Inimesegenetika Ühing) and the Estonian Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (Eesti Gerontoloogia ja Geriaatria Assotsiatsioon) as well as chairing the scientific program committee of the annual International Gene Forum conference organized by the Estonian Genome Foundation is organized.

In 2012 she received the second prize for the Estonian National Science Communication in the category "Best Popularizing Scientists, Journalists, Teachers, etc. in the Field of Science and Technology".
