Mesdag Collection

The Mesdag Collection , formerly the Mesdag Museum, is the art collection and the former artist residence of Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831–1915) and his wife Sientje van Houten (1834–1909) in the Dutch city of The Hague . After a long restoration, the museum reopened on May 14, 2011 under the new name.

Mesdag was not only a well-known marine painter, he was also a great art collector. In 1866 he began to build up a first-class collection together with his wife Sissy (also an artist). In just a few years, the collection had grown to such proportions that the Mesdags had a museum built next to their house, which opened in 1887. In 1903 the couple donated the museum and collection to the Dutch state. Mesdag remained director until 1911. Since 1991 the collection has been under the responsibility of the Van Gogh Museum . The Mesdag Collection is about half a kilometer from Panorama Mesdag , where Mesdag's most famous work, the great Panorama of Scheveningen, is on display.

collection

One of the most important collections of the French School of Barbizon is on display with works by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot , Théodore Rousseau and Jean-François Millet , Charles-François Daubigny and Eugène Delacroix . The Hague School is also represented by Maris , George Hendrik Breitner , Jozef Israëls and of course Mesdag himself. A collection of faiences from the Oud-Rozenburg factory in The Hague is also considered to be significant. Since the restoration in 1996, Hendrik Willem Mesdag's apartment and studio have also been open to the public.
