Rim of Africa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rim of Africa is the longest mountain and long-distance hiking trail in South Africa . It runs through the Cape region and runs along the Cape Fold Belt . The 650 km long route starts in Cederberg and leads to the Outeniqua mountains .

history

The establishment of the trail goes back to a private initiative of two South African mountain hikers . In 2007, the mountain hikers Galeo Saintz and Ivan Groenhof met and had the idea for a hiking trail along the mountains in the Cape region. In 2009 they started their first fundraising campaign to finance the project. The two were invited to the second World Trails Conference in South Korea in 2012 . There the "World Trails Network" was founded and Rim of Africa co-founder Galeo Saintz was elected to the board.

route

The Rim of Africa starts at the Phakius Pass in Cederberg and leads to the Outeniqua Pass near George . The route runs over six mountain passes and passes nature parks and UNESCO World Heritage sites.
