Rin ' was a J-pop band that used traditional Japanese instruments and combined traditional Japanese music with elements of modern pop music . The trio consisted of three women. All of them graduated from Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku in 2003. The debut was in December 2003, in Meguro Gajoen , the first single ("Sakitama") followed in April 2004 on Avex trax .

All three sang. In addition, Mana Yoshinaga and Chie Arai played the koto , the shamisen and the jushichi-gen , the latter being a 17-page koto. A "normal" koto only has 13 strings. Tomoka Nagasu played the biwa and the shakuhachi .

Rin 'as a word is said to be derived from the English word ring , i.e. H. Ring come. The Japanese word wa is the Japanese reading of , which means “ring”, and Sino-Japanese is read as rin , while wa in the spelling 和 stands for traditional Japan. The name is based on the desire to form a "circle of traditional Japanese music".

Since the debut, Rin 'has performed all over the world, there are several albums and singles. Several songs were used in anime and live action films. Inland Sea , the most important international album, was released on April 25, 2006 in Europe and the USA , and then also in Japan on August 30. There were guest appearances by Lisa Loeb and Leigh Nash .

On February 13th, 2009, after about 6 years, the three Japanese women decided to break up Rin '.
