Rineloricaria is a genus from the family of loricariids (Cichlidae) and is referred to as primitive group in the subfamily loricariinae viewed. The genus includes 63 species that are common in large parts of South America . (As of July 2016)

In all members of the genus, the upper and lower lip are equally developed and covered with nodules. The barbels are only slightly longer than the diameter of the eyes. The long tail filaments , which gave them the common English name Whiptail catfishes, are particularly characteristic.
