As Ringel hand shrimp refers to a group of closely related species of the genus Macrobrachium . Like all large-arm prawns of the Palaemonids, they have long claw arms. The name for the German generic name is the striking ring coloring of the striding legs of the young animals.

Common morphological features are the longitudinally grooved scissor fingers of the second pair of striding legs of the males. These grooves are covered with thick, fur-like hair. In adult females, this drawing remains at least in a more indistinct form. Freshly hatched ringed hand shrimp develop into a juvenile form within just one larval stage .
Habitat and Distribution
Ringed hand prawns inhabit freshwater streams in hilly and low mountain regions of Pakistan , northern India and Myanmar as far as Thailand . Of all representatives of this genus, they are best adapted to life in freshwater.
