The rock shrimp (Palaemoninae) are a subfamily in the family of rock and partner shrimp (Palaemonidae). The subfamily contains around nine genera with around 230 species , of which around 180 species are the large-arm shrimp ( Macrobrachium ) alone . Their rostrum is long and sawn at the bottom and top.

Rock shrimp are found worldwide in the ocean, especially in cold and temperate regions, in brackish and fresh water. In contrast to the partner shrimp (Pontoniinae), they do not live as a commensal symbiosis with other invertebrates . However, some species from the genus Urocardiella clean fish similarly to the cleaner shrimp . Many species are predatory.

Genera

The subfamily comprises more than 20 genera (as of 2015), although some previously accepted genera had to be synonymous according to a more recent analysis.
