The rock shrimp ( Palaemon ) are a genus of shrimp from the family of rock and partner shrimp (Palaemonidae). The species of this genus live worldwide on the coast of the sea or near the coast in fresh and brackish water .
description
Rock shrimp are transparent, often drawn with stripes or ring patterns in different colors. These patterns optically dissolve the body shape and thus contribute to camouflage.
Rock shrimp are omnivores and sometimes also clean fish. They themselves are eaten by fish and birds and are an important part of the food chain.
Rock shrimp are caught as food for aquarium fish , but they are also kept in aquariums because of their beautiful color .
species
In the North Sea comes Palaemon serratus ( Palaemon serratus ), North and Baltic Palaemon varians ago. However, the North Sea shrimp known as garnet belong to the genus Crangon .

While previously only purely attributed marin common species of the genus, in 2013, the former genera were Palaemonetes , Exopalaemon and Coutierella with Palaemon synonymised because it turned out that the previous system paraphyletisch was and not real relationships reproduced. The genus now also includes species living in freshwater and brackish water.
