Palaemon capensis is a species of shrimp from the genus of rock shrimp ( Palaemon ) within the family of rock and partner shrimp (Palaemonidae). It is endemic to South Africa and occurs in both fresh and brackish water . It was first described in 1897 under the name and today's synonym Leander capensis .

features

Barnard (1950) gives a maximum length of 48 mm for the males and a maximum length of 66 mm for the females. In a collection of freshwater shrimp along the southern coast of South Africa, the largest male measured 56 mm in the Palmiet River from the tip of the rostrum to the tip of the Telsons and a total length of 75 mm in the Keiskamma River with the largest female. According to the first description, the lanceolate rostrum is straight, even at the tip which is never bent upwards. The free part of the rostrum is as long or slightly shorter than the smooth cephalothorax and extends to the front end of the scales of the antennae or projects a little beyond them.

distribution and habitat

Palaemon capensis is the only known native freshwater shrimp found in the temperate Cape Floristic region of South Africa. It is common in the dark brown, acidic river systems of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape Province . There are also reports of occurrences in estuaries . The presence of this species, considered freshwater shrimp, in the salty water of the estuaries raises the question of whether salty water in estuaries is important in their life cycle as with other river prawns. Experiments suggest that a salt content of at least 1 to 2.5% may be necessary for the development of stage II larvae.
