Palaemon carteri is a species of shrimp from the genus of rock shrimp ( Palaemon ) within the family of rock and partner shrimp (Palaemonidae). It occurs in the Amazon region and is one of the most common types of shrimp there.

features

The rostrum is narrow and curved upwards. It just reaches or towers above the tip of the scaphocerite . At the dorsal edge has 6 to 10, most ventral 3 to 7 (typically 4 or more) teeth. The protrusion on the anterolateral (anterior-lateral) edge of the first segment of the anterior antennae , a defining feature in adult specimens, extends beyond the middle of the second segment, but does not or sometimes almost reaches the dorsal- distal edge of the second segment. The anterolateral spine of the first segment usually extends to the center of the protrusion. The branchiostegale spine is somewhat removed from the anterior margin of the carapace . Palpi on the mandibles are absent. Measured from the base, the masculine appendix is about 1.1 times as long as the internal appendix . The telson carries two feathered bristles (setae) between the inner distal, thorn-shaped bristles. The inner distal thorn-shaped bristles protrude beyond the distal tip of the Telsons.

Holthuis describes Palaemon carteri in the Scientific results of the Surinam Expedition 1948-1949 as completely colorless and transparent, with the exception of a dark mass in the thorax around the stomach .

Palaemon carteri is morphologically very similar to Palaemon ivonicus , both species are said to occur sympatric in the Amazon region. They are mainly differentiated by the rostral features and the position of the branchiostegal spine. However, some studies have shown that these features are insufficient to distinguish consistently.

distribution

The distribution area includes the states of Amazonas , Bolívar , Delta Amacuro and Monagas in Venezuela , Guyana , Suriname , French Guiana and in Brazil the eastern part of the state of Amazonas as well as Amapá and Pará . The holotype comes from the upper Cuyuní , a river in Guyana. Until recently, Palaemon carteri was considered common in the Rio Negro river basin (Magalhães and Pereira 2007). Studies by Carvalho et al. (2014) showed, however, that the alleged evidence of Magalhães and Pereira in the Rio Negro is the species Palaemon yuna , which was newly described in 2014 .

habitat

Palaemon carteri usually lives in waters with riparian vegetation and decomposing leaves and similar microhabitats in lakes, streams and rivers with preferably low currents. At least in the Amazon basin , it usually occurs in clear water river systems .

Taxonomy

Palaemon carteri in 1935 by Isabella Gordon as Palaemonetes carteri in the article on new and imperfectly known species of Crustacea macrura. in The Journal of the Linnean Society, Zoology 39 first described . De Grave and Ashelby showed in 2013 that Palaemonetes is a junior synonym of Palaemon and recombined the species as Palaemon carteri .
