Lipke Bijdeley Holthuis (born April 21, 1921 in Probolinggo , Dutch East Indies , † March 7, 2008 in Leiden , Netherlands ) was a Dutch crustaceologist .

Lipke Holthuis was the son of Barnard Jan Holthuis (1881-1961) and Neeltje bij de Ley (1891-1976), who originally came from Friesland but worked as teachers in eastern Java . In 1928 the family moved back to the Netherlands, where Holthuis went to school in The Hague . After graduating from school, he began studying biology at the University of Leiden in 1937 . Shortly after the university was closed by the German occupiers, he graduated in 1941 and began to work as an assistant at the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (now Naturalis ) in Leiden.

Lipke Holthuis received his doctoral degree in 1946 with the dissertation on The Decapoda macrura of the Snellius Expedition I . His doctoral supervisor was the director of the Leiden Museum, Hilbrand Boschma . From 1950 Holthuis was “Conservator Crustacea” in Naturalis, where he worked after retiring in 1986. In the course of his scientific work from 1941 until his death in 2008, Holthuis published a total of 617 articles or books, which mainly dealt with the taxonomy and systematics of crustaceans . Lipke Holthuis described over 400 new taxa , including two families, five subfamilies, 83 genera and 338 species.

During his lifetime 67 taxa were named after Lipke Holthuis, for example the shrimp Lipkius holthuisi Yaldwyn, 1960 or the large crayfish Cherax holthuisi Lukhaup & Pekny, 2006 . After his death, a compilation was published in his honor (see literature) in which 50 new taxa were described and named after him.

Lipke Holthuis collected literature on invertebrates and crustaceans throughout his life. He bequeathed this collection to Naturalis, where it is now part of the museum as the “Bibliotheca Crustaceana LB Holthuis”.
