The saw shrimp ( Palaemon serratus ) is a type of shrimp from the genus of rock shrimp ( Palaemon ) within the family of rock and partner shrimp (Palaemonidae). Sometimes it is also called common rock shrimp , based on the English name common prawn .
features
The saw shrimp is a colorless to transparent animal with distinctive slanted black lines. It becomes 9–11 cm long, making it the largest species of rock shrimp. The rostrum is long, pointed and curved upwards. It has 6–7 dorsal teeth on the top and 4 or 5 ventral teeth on the bottom.
distribution
The saw shrimp lives in a distribution area that stretches in the east Atlantic from the coasts of Scotland and Denmark to the Western Sahara , the Azores , Madeira and the Canary Islands . It is also found in the Mediterranean and Black Seas .
It lives on rocky and stony coasts in the lower tidal zone or the sublittoral up to 40 m depth and is therefore generally found at greater depths than Palaemon elegans .
