Ornamental fish
With ornamental fish (English: ornamental fish ) refers to any species of fish that are kept in aquariums because of their colorful appearance and its pleasing shape. These include many tropical fresh , brackish and marine fish that can be kept well in aquariums.
The majority also occurs in nature. Goldfish and Koi , on the other hand, are ornamental fish that have been bred specifically for keeping in an aquarium and for a pleasing appearance. Together with the numerous color and shape variants of livebearers, tooth carps , barbels , danios , tetras , labyrinth fish and cichlids , they can be called pet fish because they have the typical domestication characteristics .
Legal regulation in Austria
In Austria, the minimum requirements for keeping fish are defined in Regulation 486 in Section 7 and Annex 5.
The following applies to setting up the aquarium:
- The fish must have a free swimming area as required,
- the water quality must be guaranteed with filters and heating,
- the substrate should consist of sand, gravel or stones,
- there must be enough hiding places for the fish,
- daylight or lighting can be used to switch between day and night.
Long-term keeping of even small species in aquariums under 54 liters is prohibited. Depending on the species, aquarium sizes and ranges for the water temperature as well as limit values for the water hardness and the pH value are prescribed. The water values must be checked at least every 14 days. A regular partial water change must also be carried out if the limit values for pollution have not yet been reached. Fish must be fed regularly and varied. Young fish are to be fed daily, adult animals can do without food for one or two days, regular fasting days are recommended.
