Hubert Theophil Simar , also known as Hubertus Theophilus Simar, (born December 14, 1835 in Eupen ; † May 24, 1902 in Cologne ) was Bishop of Paderborn from 1891 to 1899 and Archbishop of Cologne from 1899 to 1902 .

Life

Simar was the youngest of eight children of a wealthy merchant family from Eupen.

After being in Duren had taken a high school in 1853, he studied in Bonn , Munich and Münster theology . He joined the Cologne Seminary at and received on 2 May 1859, the priestly ordination . He was briefly active as a chaplain in Bonn, but was soon appointed to the Bonn Theologian Convict as a repeater .

He completed his habilitation in Bonn and took over a professorship for moral theology in 1864 . He turned down an appointment to Munich in 1873. In 1880 he became a full professor in Bonn.

On June 25, 1891, he was elected Bishop of Paderborn , and on February 25, 1892, Philipp Cardinal Krementz donated him the episcopal ordination . On April 29 of the same year Pope Leo XIII appointed him . to the Apostolic Administrator of Anhalt .

In 1899 he was the preferred candidate of Emperor Wilhelm II and the Prussian state for the chair of the Archbishop of Cologne. In fact, on October 24, 1899, he was elected as the new archbishop by the Cologne Cathedral Chapter. His enthronement in Cologne took place on February 20, 1900. The state influence in the election led to dissatisfaction in Rome , so that Simar was denied an elevation to the College of Cardinals . During his tenure he moderated the training of the seminary and at the same time extended the university training of candidates for the priesthood.

Hubert Theophil Simar died in Cologne of the consequences of pneumonia which he contracted on a visitation trip. He was buried in the bishop's crypt in Cologne Cathedral .
