Rings of Medusa (short: ROM ) is a trading simulation developed by Starbyte and published by Bomico in 1989 .

Gameplay

The player takes on the role of a prince, the only son of a king who has been throne by the hostile goddess Medusa. Impoverished and cast out, the player has the task of earning enough money in an imaginary game world to raise an army against Medusa. Money is mainly made through trade , by buying certain goods cheaply in one city and selling them at high prices in a distant city. Transport between cities is dangerous because you can be attacked by robber gangs at any time. By recording scouts you can enlarge the visible area around your own character and thus recognize the opponents in good time and avoid them.

In the cities, money can be earned in the casino or information can be obtained in the temple.

In order to be able to take on Medusa in the final battle, five magic rings must be won in the game by conquering cities, treasure hunts and sea battles. The battle against Medusa can only be won if there are enough soldiers in your own ranks.

successor

In 1991 the successor The Return of Medusa was published. The game is very similar to its predecessor in terms of gameplay and presentation, but the story takes place 300 years in the future of Rings of Medusa , so that fighting is no longer with cavalry or archers, but with tanks and helicopters. The biggest difference to the predecessor is the newly added exploration of 20 dungeons. This play element is strongly reminiscent of Dungeon Master in its appearance. The ratings in the magazines were above average. The Amiga Joker awarded 82% (issue 9/91) and the PC Joker 78% (issue 2/92). The Amiga version was tested by the ASM (issue 10/91). The ASM criticized the small differences to the predecessor and therefore awarded 8 out of 12 points.

Others

This game was released for Atari ST, Amiga and C-64, whereby the Amiga and Atari versions are based on the same source code. It received a rating of 75% in the Amiga Joker with the conclusion "an absolute must for all strategy enthusiasts!".
