The Rio Culuene (also spelled Kuluene ) is one of the two source rivers of the Rio Xingu in the state of Mato Grosso in Brazil . It rises about 250 km east-northeast of the city of Cuiabá and flows in a predominantly northerly direction into the Parque Indígena do Xingu , where it forms the Rio Xingu together with the Rio Ronuro .

There were numerous pre-Columbian settlements on the Rio Culuene and its tributaries , and there are still villages of the Xingu Indians there today .
